Professional farm managers programme

Kildaton College in Piltown, Co Kilkenny, will offer the first Dairy Farm Managers programme next year.

It will include a two-year internship programme on the most progressive Irish dairy farms, with a view to developing managerial expertise and capacity of trainee managers.

In year one, the internship will be a 12-month placement on an approved Irish farm, while year two will consist of 12 months on an approved Irish farm or six months on an Irish dairy farm and six months as an approved overseas placement.

The programme will also incorporate a FETAC Level 6 Supplemental Award in Commercial Farm Management Skills. This part of the course will be aimed at teaching farm managers the financial skills for dairy farm expansion, dairy farm technology transfer and people management.

This element will involve 25 days of course contact time over the two years, including 10-12 discussion group/workshop days and three block-release periods of one week each.

To apply, applicants must have an appropriate Level 6 (or higher) award in agriculture.

If accepected, applicants will be required to pay a course charge of €800.
