Price fall in lamb continues

The lamb trade has taken something of a hit in prices throughout the past week and unfortunately the trend continued yesterday. Reports show that the drop ranged from €5-15/hd. Breeding ewes with lambs at foot, however, remain an extremely strong trade, especially for the younger types, making up to €250/unit and cull ewes selling up to €144.

Good lambs at Fermoy yesterday met a reasonably firm trade with the tops selling up to €102 over the €/kg.

Athenry Mart saw an easier trade yesterday with the bulk of the 45-50kg lambs selling for €80-90 over the weight.

Mountbellew Mart reported a strong trade especially for stag ewes. Lambs, however, met with an easier trade and were back by €5-8 on the previous week. selling for €80-90 over the weight.

At Baltinglass Mart spring lambs are coming out in growing numbers every week. Stores of 30-35kg sold up to a top price of €96/hd. Ewe hoggets went from €90-115. Cull ewes made €90-125. Breeding ewes with twin lambs at foot made €220-270/unit while the ewes with single lambs sold for €130-165.

Dowra Mart had 800 sheep on offer on Saturday. Trade, especially for ewes with lambs at foot was stronger than the previous week. Ewes with double lambs made from €240-330/unit while ewes with single lambs sold from €120 up to €250 for 10 hoggets with 10 lambs. The best of the hoggets for slaughter made from €90-130.

Lamb prices averaged €125 at Maam Cross with a tops of €136. Hoggets averaged €80.
