Montbeliarde heifer prices top €1,800/hd

Strong demand for Montbeliarde stock saw prices of over €1,800/hd paid for heifers in the past 12 months, according to the Montbeliarde Society.

"Numbers using the breed are on the increase," remarked society chairman Con Murphy.

"Some are using AI and others are crossbreeding with stock bulls, resulting in good bull sales throughout the country."

However, interest in the breed is not confined to bulls, with keen demand for both heifers and heifer calves.

"English clients are still taking the bulk of our excess stock, sometimes moving full herds across the water when some of our members retire from farming," said Mr Murphy.

"Good prices were achieved with in-calf and freshly calved heifers leaving our shores for in excess of €1,800/hd."

Mr Murphy insisted that as more young farmers contemplate going into dairying, Montbeliarde cows are the breed they should consider.

"Why? It's simple – Montbeliardes are known for ease of calving, good fat and protein, high milk yields, longevity and good cull cow and calf value," he said.

The Montbeliarde Ploughing stand will be bigger and better than last year, with Montbeliarde animals on display and society members on hand to answer all queries.

Visitors to the stand will be entered into a free draw for a trip for two to the Coopex Montbeliarde Show in France next year, sponsored by Coopex, as well as a trip to the Jura Betail Show in France, sponsored by Jura Betail.
