Stars buoy crowds to make Ploughing 2010 a success, says Darragh McCullough

It might have been cloudy overhead, but the mood was definitely sunny at this year's Ploughing Championships in Athy, Co Kildare.

A huge crowd attended the event, with plenty of attractions to keep everybody entertained. Sports stars, celebrity chefs, Government ministers, presidents and presidential hopefuls all mingled with crowds that hit more than 75,000 on some of the days.

While forecasters were predicting the worst, the crowds and ploughmen escaped most of the wet weather on each of the three days, with overnight rains only causing problems in some of the 400ac of car parks that surrounded the site.
