Farm penalties vary by over 400pc, depending on what county you are in.

Figures compiled by Independent TD, Denis Naughten, for the period from 2012-2013 show that farmers in Westmeath, Roscommon and Leitrim are regularly in the top five counties for cross compliance, nitrates and animal traceability penalties.

Farmers in Leitrim, Westmeath, Clare and Dublin had a greater than one in three chance of being fined for nitrates breaches.

Nationally, farmers had 20pc chance of being fined for failing cross-compliance or nitrates inspections. In contrast, only two out of 46 farmers inspected for nitrates in counties Laois, Carlow, Longford and Sligo were fined.
