Peadar Jordan remembered

Integrity and intelligence are two of the many fine qualities people associated with Peadar Jordan, who died last week, after a battle with poor health which had necessitated a liver transplant.
A tillage farmer from Ballon in Carlow, Peadar chaired the IFA Sugarbeet Committee during the turbulent period of Greencore exiting sugar processing in Ireland.
He excelled in this post. He had total grasp of the extremely complex sugar regimes both within and outside the EU. He knew everyone right across the sugar industry. When mob rule threatened to take over some beet grower meetings, Peadar Jordan showed extreme patience and his steady hand helped deliver the optimum beet exit deal from which Irish farmers are still benefiting in their Single Farm Payment.
Alongside their farming, Peadar and his wife Mary, renovated and opened the successful Forge Restaurant on the N80 between Ballon and Bunclody.
