Farmers awaiting payments under the Farm Improvement Scheme (FIS) could be paid within a fortnight, the ICSA has claimed.

ICSA president Gabriel Gilmartin said he was hopeful that outstanding FIS grants to some 200 farmers would be paid in the next two weeks.

He said he had received reassurances from Department of Agriculture officials that the farmers, many of whom had completed works last year, would be paid as a matter of priority.

"There has been a long hold-up in the payments to these farmers, partially as a result of an EU audit," said Mr Gilmartin.

"This has put significant financial pressure on them as the outstanding sums owed are quite substantial and, in most cases, the farmers would be dependent on bank credit."
