Orange Lodges in the South are willing to share their facilities

CADOLEMO refers to an organisation south of the Border but it is not a town in Mexico: it is the acronym for the Orange Lodges in Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim and Monaghan.

Alan Madill, project development officer with CADOLEMO, explains that there are about 40 Orange Lodges in the border counties.

While the lodges engage in mainstream Orange Order activities and host band competitions and rehearsals, Alan points out that many are under-used and some are in need of repair.

"My job is to build the capacity of the lodges in CADALEMO to engage with the local community more as they open up facilities," he says. Alan adds he is getting a very positive reaction from the lodges but maintains that patience is the key.

"Up to now the funders were trying to force the pace of change but now people are taking it at their own pace. Gradually they are becoming more comfortable with the changed situation. Evolution is the best way," he adds.
