New BSE case found in Wales

The latest case of BSE has been discovered in a six year-old cow in southwest Wales.

Initial reports suggest that the case is similar to the one found in Co Louth earlier this year, in that there is no obvious potential source for the disease from either feed or bloodlines.

Disease experts now believe that the condition may spontaneously occur in the population, which has only been recorded since compulsory testing of fallen animals began in the wake of the BSE crisis in the late 1990s, when the disease was at its height.
