Monaghan IFA's boost to charities

Patsy McArdle

A Farming organisation has provided a major funding boost for groups in Co Monaghan that are providing assistance to cancer patients and other folk hit by Alzheimer's disease.

The Co Monaghan executive of the Irish Farmers' Association has raised €12,000 to divide between the different aid groups.

Monaghan IFA chairman Bertie Stewart said yesterday: "We raised the funding through a major barbecue and we are now delighted to be able to give €6,000 to the local Alzheimer Society in the area, and a further €1,500 to each of five other cancer care and hospice groups in different towns in Co Monaghan."

May Murphy, chairperson of the Co Monaghan Alzheimer Society said: "This is a wonderful gesture by the farmers."

She added that it would be of enormous help to all of the voluntary groups helping people who are ill.
