A packed auction room burst into spontaneous applause when an adjoining farmer made the crucial final bid and bought 46.3ac of tillage ground on the Wexford/Wicklow border.

At the auction held at the Gorey offices of Quinn Properties last Friday the local man paid €460,000 or €10,000/ac for the ground located at Askinch, Coolgreany, Gorey.

David Quinn of Quinn Properties described the farm as 'a real good piece of ground' laid out in two fields of 30ac and 16ac respectively. According to the owner, the holding consistently produced strong grain yields and had not an inch of waste.

The property, which is on an elevated site, has no road frontage but has access from two points – a cul-de-sac at one side and by means of a laneway with a shared right of way at the other.

The auction got under way with an opening bid of €300,000 and, with two bidders in action, matters moved swiftly until the price climbed to €450,000 and it was put on the market.

After two further bids the amount reached €460,000 and the hammer came down in favour of the adjoining farmer, much to the delight of the assembled neighbours and friends.
