Irish MEPs are calling on the EU to provide more transparency on supermarket operations in Ireland and the margins which they are making on produce from raw material coming from farms.
Ireland South MEP Sean Kelly said that the profit margins which Irish supermarkets are believed to be making are not acceptable given the tight margins under which Irish farmers whose produce is being retailed in the outlets are required to work within.
He said that Irish MEPs are now being supported by other mmember states in an initiative to change the regime in which the major supermarkets operate in this country.
"We are bringing forward a Known Initiative Report, which, if passed by the Parliament, will go before the Commission for recommendations to change the legislation," he said.
