Mayo were second best in their All-Ireland semi-final defeat last weekend but Ballina farmer Sean O'Donnell (33), inset, tasted success as he was crowned the FBD Young Farmer of the Year last night.
The dairy farmer was presented with the coveted award at a ceremony in Bantry, Co Cork, after seeing off the challenge of over 240 entrants from every county in the country. The competition is run with the Irish Farmers Association and Macra na Feirme.
Sean is a dairy farmer and has 110 milking cows. The keen GAA fan plans to increase his herd to 150. Of the six finalists last night, Eamon Burke from Galway finished second, ahead of Limerick's Padraig O'Connor.
