Market shows no sign of slowing as heavy cattle sell for €2.20-2.26/kg
Trade continues to be very strong at the marts for cattle. Good quality stock and fleshy animals fit for slaughter commanded top prices, while suckler cows with calves at foot made over €2,000/unit in many cases. Heavy prime cattle sold for €2.20-2.60/kg generally.
Steer and heifers prices at Kilkenny mart rose by €20-30/hd on the previous week. Heavy bullocks made from €2.09-2.59/kg, while Continental steers of 400-600kg sold for €2.50-2.99/kg. Friesian and Angus bullocks sold for €2.00-2.40/kg and lighter lots made from €2.34-3.18/kg. Beef heifers sold for €2.23-2.46/kg, with butcher types making from €2.19-2.56/kg. Stores generally sold for €2.20-3.07/kg.
At Ballinakill mart, light store prices increased by €20/hd to €2.10-3.40/kg. Forward stores and heavy bullocks sold for €2.20-2.80/kg. Beef heifers ranged from €2.00-2.50/kg with the stores moving at €1.95-2.45/kg.
Weanling bulls and heifers bottomed out at €2.00/kg, with heifers making up to €2.50/kg while the bulls topped out at €3.20/kg. Cull cows made from €1.50-2.25/kg.
Light stores sold for €350-710 over their weight at Ballymote mart. Heavy lots made up to €825 with the weight. Heifers under 400kg sold for €375-650 over the €/kg, with heavier lots making up to €825 over.
In Raphoe, the best heavy bulls over 600kg sold for €600-1,375 with the weight. Beef bullocks made up to €965 over, while well-fleshed heifers sold for €545-790 with the €/kg. Stores made from €400-900 over. Cull cow prices ranged from €700-2,130 each.
Beef bullocks at Enniscorthy sold for €760-1,050 with their weight, stores made from €280-1,000 over. Beef and butcher heifers ranged from €700-1,020 over the €/kg and stores sold for €350-850 with their weight. Weanling bulls made from €500-1,000 over the weight.
At the calf sale, Continental bulls sold for €380-555/hd and heifers sold for €275-515/hd. The heifers ranged from €200-410. Prices for Friesian bull calves varied from €175-375.
