A 62ac farm a mile from Maynooth, Co Kildare sold at auction last week for €870,000, or €14,000/ac.

Located next to Moyglare Stud and divided by a public road, the holding is described by auctioneer Thomas Potterton as a lovely piece of ground.

On one side of the road is a parcel extending to 13ac in two fields of grass which is bounded by the River Rye.

Across the road is a 49ac parcel of ground laid out in four divisions that are fenced by mature hedges. A stream runs through both lots.

The land enjoys considerable frontage on to two roads, with access from two entrances.

The 49ac has handling facilities for cattle and sheep in a modern, galvanised, enclosed stock collecting area. These facilities include a chute and holding pens.

A crowd of 35 people turned up for the auction.

The 13ac parcel opened at €130,000 and attracted two bidders before stalling at €220,000. The 49ac section opened at €400,000 but bidding stopped at €450,000.

The €14,000/ac reflects the pattern of prices currently being paid at auction for good land in north Leinster.
