Live exports help keep prices firm

Ewes with lambs at foot and nice ewe hoggets are probably the strongest trade at the moment, but all sheep remain relatively firm thanks in some way to live exports helping to keep a floor under prices.

Butcher lambs of 50kg made up to €60 over in Baltinglass last week. The more factory type of 45kg sold up to €57 over, while the lighter types of 40kg and less made €45-55 along with the weight. Cast ewes were in a range of €70-120. Aged ewes with lambs made up to €150, while first-crop ewes with lambs sold up to €170.

Mountbellew had a similar number of sheep on offer to the previous week. Spring lambs met with firm trade, with increased demand for fleshy and heavy lambs. Those types made from €53-63 over the weight. Stag ewes met with good trade.

Heavier ewes were slightly easier to previous weeks, however lighter ewes were stronger trade. Quality lots of ewes with lambs at foot met with brisk trade, selling up to €184. Lighter cull ewes met with increased demand. Heavier ewes were slightly easier. Prices ranged from €70 to €130.

There was a small sale in Kilkenny Mart but trade was reported as very sharp. Butcher lambs made €62-74 over. The factory types were selling from €51- 69 over. Hoggets sold for €40-50 over in general. Cull ewes ranged from €40-120.

At Enniscorthy Mart, spring lambs sold for €56-68 over or €93-1114/hd. The general run for wether hoggets was €51-67 over the €/kg in a range of €97-115, with the store hogget making from €90-97/hd.

Good farmer interest in limited supplies of ewe hoggets resulted in prices of up to €80 over their weight. Young ewes suitable for breeding and with twin lambs sold from €115 up to a top price of €220, while ewes and single lambs ranged from €103-185.

Dowra Mart had 700 sheep on offer on Saturday last. Prices were up from the previous week, especially for the breeding stock. Hoggets made from €90 to €125/hd, with good breeding types making up to €148/hd. Heavy cull ewes made from €80 to €115/hd, with feeding ewes making from €60 to €80 each.

Young breeding ewes made up to €125/hd. Hoggets with single lambs at foot made from €140 to €180 each, with older ewes with lambs at foot making from €110 to €200 for ewes with pairs. Store lambs are starting to appear in more numbers and these made from €65 to €85/hd, while heavy lambs made from €90 to €110 each.

Ewes with lambs averaged €83 in Maam Cross, with a top price of €195 paid. The average price for the hoggets was €75. 30kg lambs sold for €70. The mart are offering to sell lambs by weight for the season.
