The four-day extension of the GLAS scheme has seen the number of farmers applying to the scheme jump to over 22,000, as of yesterday morning.

A further 8,000 farmers have registered actions online, suggesting that the total number of applicants should pass 25,000 by the deadline at midnight tonight.

Agriculture Minister, Simon Coveney, said that the level of interest was unprecedented, with over 36,000 applications logged so far, adding that he was delighted with the reaction to the new scheme. However, he stressed that there would be no further extensions, citing the pressures building on advisors struggling to cope with workloads ahead of the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) deadline this Friday.
