Lakeland to shut Lough Egish plant

Lakeland Dairies confirmed that its Lough Egish milk drying facility is to close in early April with the loss of 50 jobs.

A spokesperson for the company said up to 10 members of staff at the Co Monaghan plant would be redeployed to the company's drying plant development in Baileboro, Co Cavan.

There was political reaction to the closure last week although it was first announced in September 2006 as part of Lakeland Dairies' restructuring plan.

A spokesman said the planned closure had been confirmed and restated publicly at farmer meetings throughout the region in the past two years. SIPTU, which represents workers at the plant, said that the appropriate agreements had been reached with management.
