Just 2,500 apply to register for new spray regulations
Just 2,500 people have so far applied to be registered as professional users of sprays ahead of the new pesticides regulations coming into force later this year.
Farmers are being urged to consider whether they need to complete a course, with just a fraction of the country's landowners lodging applications with the Department of Agriculture to register as professional spray users.
There are 1,999 professional users currently registered, with a further 500 applications being processed.
However, there are more than 4,000 farmers with substantial tillage operations, while thousands more grassland farmers also operate sprayers on a regular basis.
Under the new Sustainable Use of Pesticides Directive (SUD) users must be registered by November 26.
