IFA warning on solar energy land lease deals
Farmers are being urged to seek legal advice before signing any land leasing option agreements with solar energy development companies.
The IFA has been receiving concerned phone calls from farmers mainly in the south east and Munster region. The association's deputy president Tim O'Leary urged any farmers approached by solar development firms to read all the details in the contract and contact a solicitor.
He said all producers should be aware they may face restrictions on their existing farming practices.
Similar to wind energy projects, firms would usually try to lease land for lengthy periods of up to 30 years.
Mr O'Leary said there were not yet adequate policies in place to set out rules around solar energy development.
