High stock demand keeps returns strong
Strong prices held at the marts this week aided by good demand for all types. Some marts also reported unusually high numbers for the time of the year.
There was good demand in Athenry Mart yesterday for all types of stock on offer. Factory-type lambs made €50-60 with the weight, while heavy lambs sold for up to €62 over as 55kg types made €117/hd.
There was nearly a full clearance of stock at Maam Cross Mart where prices held firm on the previous week. Lamb prices averaged €38/hd, up to a high of €88/hd. Cull ewes sold for a €35/hd average, and up to €48/hd, while in-lamb ewes achieved an average of €95/hd.
The sheep trade also continued strong at Dowra Mart on Saturday where there was good demand for all classes of hoggets. Cull ewes made €55-110/hd and there was a good selling trade for the young in-lamb ewes, but trade was quieter for the older ewes.
There were 800 sheep on offer at Baltinglass Mart but, again, no dramatic difference in trade to the previous week.
Lambs between 42-45kg made €85-105/hd, 35-45kg lambs achieved €75-100/hd and the lighter lambs made up to €75/hd. Fat and store ewes sold for €50-95/hd. Ewes scanned in lamb with doubles sold for €135/hd and the singles made €60-100/hd.
Next Saturday's sale in Baltinglass will include 60 two-year-old ewes scanned in lamb.
Carnew Mart had a big entry -- 2,200 sheep on offer -- for the time of year last Thursday, but there was little change in trade from the previous week, though hogget numbers did ease.
