Isabel Lunn (10) beams with delight after the family's 'gentle giant' Sandy won Overall Champion Dog at Manorhamilton Show in Co Leitrim last weekend.

Her father Padraic, from Calry in Sligo, says the family rescued the French Mastiff cross from the Sligo County Council dog shelter just over two-and-a-half years ago.

"She is like a member of the family. She's very good with children and they're just like best buddies," he told the Farming Independent.

"Many people go out and buy expensive dogs but we'd highly recommend getting a rescue dog," he said after Sandy was awarded the Joe Eames Perpetual Memorial Cup by judge and vet Mark Slattery.

Meanwhile, more than 150 of the country's top sheepdogs will be heading for Johnstown, Co Kilkenny next month for the 2015 Irish National Sheepdog Trials.
