Gardai to up the ante in rustling probe
Gardai investigating cattle rustling in the Border counties are to carry out further raids and searches in the coming weeks.
Officers said they were pursuing a number of leads on both sides of the Border and were closing the net on the gang believed to be behind the latest outbreak since the start of the year.
Half a dozen incidents of rustling have been reported to gardai in counties Monaghan and Cavan over the past 10 weeks and officers have been trying to trace the stolen cattle with the help of a new database set up by the Department of Agriculture.
Apart from the dedicated investigation based at Monaghan, gardai along the border are also gathering intelligence on the rustlers through Operation Thor which was set up last November to tackle rural crime nationwide.
During a series of searches last month investigators found two suspected illegal abattoirs in the Cavan-Monaghan area.
It was incorrectly stated in last week's edition that one of them was located in Swanlinbar.
