FWMS interest 'will be paid this year'

The Department of Agriculture has confirmed that interest on deferred Farm Waste Management Scheme (FWMS) payments would be made this year.

Referring to the special ex-gratia payment not exceeding 3.5pc of the value of the deferred amount, a statement from Agriculture Minister Brendan Smith said: "This is the final element of the payments and I am committed to making this payment also in the early part of this year."

The Department of Agriculture recently cleared €100m for payment of the final 20pc instalment of the FWMS money to more than 14,700 farmers. However, this did not include the 3.5pc ex-gratia payment.

ICSA president Gabriel Gilmartin last week expressed his disappointment that the 3.5pc interest payment had been delayed.
