'Forgotten farmers' call for action

The 'forgotten farmers' excluded from receiving basic payments have called for the matter to be addressed as a matter of urgency by the next Agriculture Minister.
More than 200 so-called 'old' young farmers who are unable to qualify for supports under the latest CAP reform met in Athlone at the weekend where they demanded action.
Farmer Kenneth O'Brien, from the group, said they "fall between the cracks" of the CAP.
IFA candidate Joe Healy said it would cost €12m to address within the current CAP but if left it would cost €40m in future dole payments as farmers give up. Candidate Henry Burns said each of the complex cases must be dealt with on its own merits.
