Fat culls set standard
The sheep trade at the marts stayed steady over the past week. Fat cull ewes were probably the best sellers, making up to €140. Ewes either in-lamb or with lambs at foot generally sold for €170-270. Heavy lambs made €65-80 over the weight. Factory types made €60-72 over, while stores went for €60-100.
Fermoy Mart had more than 400 sheep yesterday. Trade was reported as slightly easier but well-fleshed lambs still made €70-81 over the €1/kg with a top of €135 for 54kg. The 40-50kg lambs sold for €50-65 over.
At Athenry Mart, prices were a tad easier. Again, there were numerous examples of good lambs making €65-74 with the weight. Plainer lots made €55-65 over, while well fleshed cull ewes sold for €100-125.
Down in Enniscorthy Mart the in-lamb ewes made €202-220 while ewes with lambs at foot ranged from €195-265.
Blackface mountain ewe lambs were selling for €110-127 at Maam Cross, while the cross bred wethers ranged from €52-95 each. The mountain type wethers made €55-80. Cull ewes sold from €45-75.
The sheep trade was similar to previous weeks at Dowra Mart with ewe lambs for breeding making €100-135 each and store lambs €65-90. The best of the fat ewes made €80-120, with ewes for further feeding making €55-75 each. In-lamb ewes sold for €150-235 each.
Larger numbers of sheep were on offer at Mountbellew Mart with good demand for lambs. However, prices were slightly easier overall. Ewe lambs made up to €140, while prices for cull ewes ranged from €78-142.50.
Baltinglass reported an improved trade for heavy lambs by €2-3/hd with prices for the 50-60kg types ranging from €118-125. The 45-50kg lots sold for €105-115 each. Stores made up to €105. Ewe lambs topped out at €135. Prices for ewes with lambs at foot ran at €195-245, while culls sold for €115-125.
