Hundreds of furious farmers lobbied local TDs at the weekend after Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney slashed their farm incomes by announcing a 50pc cut in funding for the AEOS this year.
At an emergency meeting of the IFA national executive, held in Portlaoise on Friday night, angry farmers claimed the reduction in payments for those leaving REPS and joining AEOS would amount to an average of €3,000.
The reduction was described as a devastating blow that would be acute in SAC and commonage areas where farming activities are severely restricted.
