The Commission has confirmed that a Food and Veterinary Office (FVO) visit to Ireland takes place this week.

The aim of the FVO visit is to gather information on the implementation of EU legislation on the electronic identification of sheep and goats (EID). "It is part of a series of fact-finding visits to a number of member states" a Commission spokesperson said.

"We hope to learn about the practical experience of member states in the implementation of the [EID] legislation as well as identifying issues that might be hampering implementation of the legislation and so undermining the traceability of animal movements," the Commission source added. "At the end of the series of visits, an overview report will be drafted and published in due course."

The FVO team is due to meet with farm organisations and visit marts.
