EU silent over Canada deal
The European Commission has refused to comment on reports that a trade agreement between the EU and Canada could be finalised by the end of the month.
"As negotiations are still ongoing at this stage, I am afraid I cannot comment," a Commission spokesman said.
However, sources in Brussels have cast doubt on an agreement being finalised prior to the summer break in August.
The belief is that Canada over-egged their demands at meetings on the fringes of the recent G8 summit in Enniskillen, damaging the prospects for a deal in the process.
Access for Canadian beef into the EU and European dairy produce into Canada appear to be the main sticking points.
