Electronic mart bidding demo at Ennis

Farmers will have a chance to see the future of mart bidding at an open day in Ennis Mart on Monday, November 28.
Hosted by ICOS, the day will include a demonstration of an electronic bidding system for livestock that is already in operation in several regions of France. The auction process remains completely transparent but bidders remain anonymous to all except the auctioneer using a system of electronic bidding buttons that are provided at the start of the sale.
The day will also show a working display of electronic identification (EID) sheep handling systems.
ICOS marts boss Michael Spellman said that the full introduction of EID for sheep provides an opportunity for the Irish sheep sector to find ways of differentiating its offering to consumers.
Two auctioneering software companies, Infoscience and Newline, will demonstrate their systems. Electronic tag readers will also be on display with both the race and stick types of reader in use.
Demonstrations start at 2pm.
