Stone suppliers like the Killarney branch of Roadstone are reporting a massive bounce in sales to farmers keen to improve drainage.

"We saw a 60pc increase in sales in 2013," said sales representative, Denis Buckley.

And he believes that the trend is set to continue for another year.

"Obviously last year was a great year to be doing any kind of drainage work but we'd be hopeful that if the weather came any way right this year, that we'd do a similar amount of trade on the back of the renewed interest in drainage," he said.

The most popular grades of stone that Mr Buckley's quarry supplies is a 20mm grade costing €16/t and a 50mm stone at €12/t.

Neither price includes haulage or VAT.
