Deadline nears for flood claim

Declan O’Brien

Time is running out for the Government to submit a claim to the EU's Solidarity Fund for compensation for victims of the flooding in Ireland late last year.

The claim was made by MEP Mairead McGuinness, who called on the Government to clarify if it intends to make a submission to the fund.

"This fund provides for support for regions hit by natural disasters. It requires that the Government assess the scale of the damage and submit this to the EU by the end of January," Ms McGuinness said.

While direct damage from the floods must total more than €900m for Ireland to receive in the region of €25m, Ms McGuinness pointed out that it is also possible to access funding if a region is hit by serious and lasting effects in living conditions and economic stability.

"Many of the areas that suffered losses due to the flooding also suffered hardship from the severe snow and frost over the Christmas/New Year period. They need to know what action, if any, the Government is taking to get help for them at EU level," the MEP said.
