The deadline for registering septic tanks is this Friday, February 1. Only those who pay the €50 registration fee before the deadline will be entitled to apply for grant aid on any remedial works that are required on their systems.
Houses will also need to be registered in order to be sold. The Minister for the Environment, Phil Hogan, has also stated that houses that do not register will be more likely to be inspected.
Grants of up to 80pc are available for households with combined incomes of less than €50,000 and 50pc grants are available for households with incomes of up to €75,000.
No grants are available to households with incomes higher than this. However, grants for remedial work are only available after the inspection has taken place.
Registration forms are available at libraries and county council offices or online at www.protectourwater.ie
Over 300,000 households, or 60pc of the total according to CSO figures, have registered their tanks so far.
However, daily registrations have increased five-fold in the last few weeks.
