Waterford herd is top of the EBI rankings

Martin Ryan

A County Waterford breeder has retained the top herd EBI ranking in the country for the third consecutive year, in the first release of the data for 2017.

In what was also the first release of data since the EBI base change was carried out, the herd of Kieran Hearne from Carrick-on-Suir received an EBI of €182 — which is up €9 from the top figure from the September 2016 run — with €52 coming from the milk sub-index and €93 coming from the fertility sub-index.

In second place is the herd of Timothy Fitzgerald from Ballyroan, Portlaoise, Co Laois, with an EBI of €171, and third is David Fitzgerald from Curraglass, Mallow, Co Cork, with an EBI of €170.

Thomas Supple from Ballyheigue, Co Kerry, recorded the biggest increase, with his average EBI rising from €120 to €132, placing him in 62nd position on the list — a massive 95 places better than the previous evaluation.

There are now 19 herds with an EBI of €150 or more, an increase of 12 herds from the previous evaluation.
