A dairy farmer who has revolutionised his farming operation has been named the overall winner at the Zurich Farm Insurance 'Farming Independent' Farmer of the Year Awards.

Peter Hynes and his wife Paula, from Aherla, Co Cork, have tapped into the very latest technology.

The judges felt that Mr Hynes deserved the overall Grand Prix award as he embodied not just the best of his Rising Star category, but the very best of Irish farming.

Lorcan Harding, director of sales and distribution at Zurich, said: "As Ireland's fastest growing farm insurer, Zurich is proud to continue to help celebrate excellence in farming and recognise farmers for their contribution to communities and society."

Farmers joined sponsors including Zurich, ICMSA, Teagasc and the Health and Safety Authority at a ceremony in Dublin's Ballsbridge Hotel.
