Crunching the numbers

Three-year-olds

Last year, 50 three-year-old horses sold for more than €5,000. Of those, a total of 15 were by thoroughbred sires, 11 by Irish sport horse sires and 28 by continental sires. The remainder were either by Irish Draught or unknown sires.

This year, there were no significant changes, as 52 horses sold for in excess of €5,000. Eight of these were by thoroughbred sires, seven by Irish sport horse sires and 25 by continental sires.

Only five stallions had more than one offspring selling for more than €5,000 this year, and these stallions were Cult Hero (two offspring), Carrick Diamond Lad (two), Varo (two), Shannondale Sarco (three) and VDL Douglas (three).

When horses sold for €4,000-5,000 are included, the following stallions produced more than one offspring that sold for more than €4,000: Varo (two), Chacoa (two), Cult Hero (three), Harlequin du Carel (three), Lux Z (three), and Carrick Diamond Lad (five).

Four-year-olds

The number of four-year-olds exceeding €5,000 at public auction dropped from 69 12 months ago to only 30 this year.

Of the 69 horses that exceeded the €5,000 mark last year, 17 were by thoroughbred sires, 19 by Irish sport horse sires and 23 by continental sires. This year, the 30 horses consisted of four that were sired by thoroughbreds, five by Irish sport horses and eight by continental sires.

The following stallions produced more than one animal that exceeded €4,000 at this year's sales: Errigal Flight (two), VDL Douglas (two), Lux Z (two), Ekstein (two), Ricardo Z (two), Master Imp (two), and Carrick Diamond Lad (two).

No stallion had multiple offspring achieving more than €5,000 in this age category.

Five-year-olds or more

Some 84 horses aged five and older achieved a sales price of more than €5,000 this year.

Twelve of these were by thoroughbred sires, 13 by Irish sport horse sires and 24 by continental sires. The remainder were either by Irish Draught or unknown sires.

Twelve stallions gave more than one offspring that sold for in excess of €5,000: Lux Z (2), Bonnie Prince (two), Ghareeb (two), Cruising (two), Courage (two), Don Juan de la Bouverie (two), Ricardo Z (three), VDL Douglas (three), Harlequin du Carel (three), Classic Vision (two), Star Kingdom (three), and Welcome Flagmount (five).

Powerswood Purple (two), Tullagh Flight (two), Bonnie Prince (two), Classic Vision (two), Don Juan de la Bouverie (two), Courage (two), Ghareeb (three), Cruising (three), VDL Douglas (three), Harlequin du Carel (three), Star Kingdom (three), Ricardo Z (four), Welcome Flagmount (five) and Lux Z (five) were the stallions that produced multiple stock exceeding €4,000.

Exceeding €5,000

Tannenhof Carmelito S (two), Don Juan de la Bouverie (two), Derg Cruise (two), Power Blade (two), Stormhill Miller (two), Bonnie Prince (two), Ghareeb (two), Cult Hero (two), Varo (two), OBOS Quality (two), Carrick Diamond Lad (three), Ramiro B (three), Ricardo Z (three), Shannondale Sarco St Ghyvan (three), Lux Z (three), Colin Diamond (four), Courage (four), Cruising (five), Welcome Flagmount (five), Harlequin du Carel (five) and VDL Douglas (seven) were the stallions that sired multiple offspring across all age groups that sold for more than €5,000 this year.
