Crunching the numbers
Last year, 50 three-year-old horses sold for more than €5,000. Of those, a total of 15 were by thoroughbred sires, 11 by Irish sport horse sires and 28 by continental sires. The remainder were either by Irish Draught or unknown sires.
This year, there were no significant changes, as 52 horses sold for in excess of €5,000. Eight of these were by thoroughbred sires, seven by Irish sport horse sires and 25 by continental sires.
Only five stallions had more than one offspring selling for more than €5,000 this year, and these stallions were Cult Hero (two offspring), Carrick Diamond Lad (two), Varo (two), Shannondale Sarco (three) and VDL Douglas (three).
When horses sold for €4,000-5,000 are included, the following stallions produced more than one offspring that sold for more than €4,000: Varo (two), Chacoa (two), Cult Hero (three), Harlequin du Carel (three), Lux Z (three), and Carrick Diamond Lad (five).
The number of four-year-olds exceeding €5,000 at public auction dropped from 69 12 months ago to only 30 this year.
