Continentals popular as bullocks up €30/hd

Bullock prices were up by €20-30/hd at some of the marts this week, which reported a particularly strong trade for quality continental bullocks and heifers.
Carrigallen mart in Co Leitrim had 600 weanlings and 100 calves on offer and there was a strong trade for continental calves, which made €225-430, while Friesian bulls sold for €62-225. Trade was slightly back for the weanling bulls from the previous week, as lighter bulls made €268-570 over and heavier bulls sold for €260-605. Weanling heifers were similar to last week.
Carrigallen is holding a show and sale of heifers on Thursday beginning at 12pm, where 650 will be offered for sale.
Carnew mart had 690 cattle and 810 calves on offer on Saturday and trade was similar to last week, with strong demand for beef and forward cattle. There was an excellent trade reported for bulls and heifers suitable for export. However, lighter and plainer cattle were easier by €10/hd.
Beef and forward store bullocks made €260-510 over, store bulls sold for €180-425 over, beef heifers made €190-425 over, store heifers posted €160-365 over and dry cows made from €135 under to €315 over.
Bullocks achieved €200-600 over at Headford mart, heifers sold for €150-485 over, suckler cows made €700-1,300/hd and cull cows were sold for €250-875/hd.
Bullock prices were up €20-30/hd at Balla mart on the same day as beef bullocks made €220-480 over, store bullocks sold for €200-600 over, beef heifers made €200- 410 over, store heifers posted €180-540 over, dry cows made €400-1,050/hd and in-calf cows and cows with calves scored €700-1,710/hd.
There was also an excellent trade for continental bullocks and heifers at Ballinkill mart.
