The national final of Macra's Irish Dairy Board Dairy Stockjudging competition took place at the Irish Holstein Friesian Association Open Day in Wicklow last week.
First prize in the senior competition went to Sarah Condren from Wicklow, while the U23 competition was won by Shane McHugh from Leitrim.
Runners-up were Michael Murphy, from Wexford, in the senior event and Ann Buckley, from Carbery, in the U23 competition.
The dairy stockjudging competition takes the form of an academic test followed by the score-marking in order of merit of a pen of heifers and a pen of cows. Competitors are also interviewed on their overall grading of the animals and must answer questions on the technical aspects of dairy farming.
Pictured at the event (on right, from left to right) are Liam O'Neill, Irish Dairy Board; senior winner Sarah Condren, Wicklow; and Macra Leinster vice-president William Holohan.
Meanwhile, The Miss Macra festival is celebrating its 40th anniversary this August and a festival with a difference is being organised to mark the occasion.
The organisers are calling on participants over the past four decades to share their funny stories or photos for a commemorative booklet for the occasion.
