China quarantine agreement boost for Irish horse sector

The Irish horse sector got a boost this week with the announcement of a new veterinary certification agreement between Ireland and China.

Key stakeholders, including Coolmore Stud and Irish Thoroughbred Marketing, have already been establishing themselves in the nascent Chinese market over the past 12 months.

However, up to now all Irish horses for export to China were required to go through quarantine in Holland.

This latest development will save the sector potentially hundreds of thousands a year as the trade in thoroughbreds ramps up over the coming years.

Coolmore are already working on a €38.5m deal to open a horse breeding stud in Tianjin, China's fourth largest city.
