Charolais weanling secures top price at Roscommon

A top price of €4.21/kg paid for a 315kg Charolais marked the peak of the trade at the Special Weanling Show and Sale at Roscommon Mart.

Exhibited by Seamus Walsh, Moher, Ballyleague, the excellent entry was judged Best Weanling Bull and overall Champion of the show.

Mart Manager, Maura Quigley said that there was a strong trade for weanling heifers with prices averaging €2.64/kg and a maximum price of €3.66/kg. There was also a good demand for bull weanlings with average prices of €2.54/kg. The attendance included both exporters and farmers but the main farmer trade in the area does not reach its seasonal peak until October.

Balla Weanling Show

Farmer trade dominated at the Weanling Show and Sale at Balla Mart, Co Mayo where the Champion of the Show was a Charolais bull exhibited by Bridget Mullaney, Creggs, Balla and weighing 555kg sold for €1,500. Mart Manager, Michael Murphy said that there was a mix of farmers and export customers, with a good presence from Northern Ireland. "The farmers bought 35 to 40pc of the weanlings on offer," he said.
