Champion heifer goes for €6,500 at Elite Angus show and sale

A 14-month-old heifer hit the top price at €6,500 at the Irish Angus Cattle Society Elite Show and Sale in Carrick-on-Shannon after being chosen as the Female Champion of the Show.

Bred by Michael and Oliver Flanagan, of Moydrum Castle Pedigree Herds, Athlone, Co Westmeath, Moydrum LuLu, who was sired by Ballyshannon Eric, was selected as the Female Champion of the Show.

The heifer was purchased by Lisa Smith, Doneraile, Co Cork for €6,500.

The highest priced bull on the day was Laheens Larry 399, sired by Friarstown Ideal Pete, and bred by Cathal Duignan, Laheen House, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Leitrim. He sold to a Northern Ireland breeder for €6,400.

It was double success for Cathal Duignan who exhibited the Reserve Champion bull, 12-month-old, Laheens Dan P404, sired by Bunlahy John G and purchased by FJ Hamill, Downpatrick, Co Down for €4,300.

A red Angus, Newstar Red Lawerence, bred by Sean Kilkenny, Ballinagh, Co Cavan was sold to Wayne Acheson, Omagh, Co Tyrone for €6,100. The bull was sired by Rawburn Edge.

Show judge, John Appelbe choose Drumcrow Laporto as his Male Champion of Show. Born July 2014 and sired by Drumcrow Joker the champion was bred by Frank McKiernan, Ballinagh, Co Cavan and sold for €5,700 to John O'Sullivan, Castletown-Geoghegan, Co Westmeath.

Bulls met with a very strong trade, many selling for over €5,000 and an overall average of €3,500 recorded for the 70pc clearance of the entry,


Reserve Champion heifer was Lecarrow Laura, bred by Patrick Murphy, Charlestown, Co Mayo and sold to Keith Vickery, Rosscarbery, Co Cork for €4,000.

The sire of the heifer was Friarstown Ideal Pete which was also the sire of the highest priced bull at the show.

Heifers averaged €3,100 with an 80pc clearance of the entry.
