Cattle marts: Lively demand for store heifers and weanlings

The mart trade continues to go from strength to strength. All categories were reported as meeting with a very lively demand, especially nice quality weanling and store heifers.

Prices for R grade types were ranging from €2-2.40/kg at Ennis Mart where suckler cows sold to a top price of €2,025 for a young Charolais cow with a six-week-old bull calf at foot. Tops for in-calf cows was €1,700 for a Limousin. Lighter store bullocks of 400-500kg were making €2/kg. Heavier steers sold in a range of €1.85-2.00/kg.

Kilkenny Mart had 600 cattle on offer, with a good trade all round. Store bullocks were the best sellers. Light continental types made up to €2.32/kg, while the general run sold for €1.80-2.16/kg. Friesian steers made up to €1.55/kg. Heavy bullocks over 600kg made €1.70-2.03/kg. Heavy Friesian steers sold to €1.66/kg. Butcher heifers were selling from €1.70 to €1.90/kg, with beef heifers making €1.60-1.90/kg. Store heifers made up to €2.25/kg. Continental cull cows sold from 90c/kg to €1.55/kg, while Friesian cows made 0.75-€1.35/kg.

At Balla Mart there were 923 cattle on offer with a good trade for most types of cattle -- especially for the heavy bullocks and breeding heifers -- with prices up on the previous week. Heifers were up €10-20/hd. Heavier types sold up to a top of €705 over their weight. Good stores were selling for €420-790 over. Plainer lots of steers made €200-340 over the €1/kg, with nicer stores making €240-580 over. Prices for the weanling bulls ranged from €340 to €590 over the €1/kg reflecting an improvement of €20/hd, while heifers sold for €280-445 over.

Quality cull cows were making from €230 to €435 over the weight. Suckler cows with calves at foot made from €1,000-1,700 for the best of the lots on offer, while older cows made from €720 to €1,400/unit. They will be holding a special U and R grade weanling sale at this week's sale.

Top class bulls over 600kg sold from €350 over up to a top of €1,105 over the weight up in Raphoe. Beef bullocks made €405-620 over the €1/kg. Stores sold for €200-620 over. In the heifer section, the stores made €200-525 over the weight with the heavier lots making €260-660 over. Cull cows sold from €400 up to €1,650.

Beef bullocks at Enniscorthy sold from €900 to €1,545/hd or €320-690 over their weight. Stores made €685-940 which reflected a range over the €1/kg of €275-595.

Beef and butcher heifer prices ran from €885-1,235 or €305-630 over. This was an improvement of €10-20/hd. Store heifers sold from €575-855 or €240-495 with the €1/kg. Cull cows made from €115 over up to a top of €545 over the weight.

There were 300 suck calves for sale, with a very strong interest from customers. Friesian bull calves sold from €105 to €320/hd. Continental bulls made €230-440, with the heifers selling for €200-385.

Light store heifers at Ballymote made from €250 over for plainer types up to €475 over for the better quality lots.

A special sale of dry cows and springers will be held next Friday.
