Cattle kills on the rise as sheep level drops

Cattle slaughterings jumped by 13.6pc in February, compared to the same month last year.

The number of cattle slaughtered at meat plants last month was 141,400hd, compared to 124,500hd in February 2009.

A yearly comparison shows that slaughterings in the first two months of 2010 are currently running 12pc ahead of the same period in 2009.

However, the level of sheep slaughterings has fallen significantly during the same period.

Some 172,100 sheep were slaughtered in February 2009 but this figure fell to 150,200 in February 2010, a drop of 12.7pc.

Comparing the first two months of 2009 and 2010, sheep slaughterings fell by 18.4pc since last year.

Pig slaughterings increased by 7.3pc from 188,400 in February 2009 to 202,200 in February 2010.
