Mounting pressure from the European Parliament and member states is likely to result in changes to the proposed CAP greening rule that 7pc of farms are retained as Ecological Focus Areas (EFAs).

Speaking at the National Bioenergy Conference, Andreas Pilzecker, from DG Agriculture, said he believed that sooner or later, the European Commission would either reduce the area required from 7pc or give a broader definition of an EFA to include common farm features.

Bioenergy company boss John Gilliland said perennial energy crops should be included in an EFA definition because they sequestered carbon and improved water quality.
