A 19.5ac parcel of ground in two fields with a derelict house near Summerhill and Rathmolyon, Co Meath sold at auction last week for €147,000 or about €7,500/ac.

Situated in Umberstown Great, three miles from Rathmolyon and Summerhill, the land is laid out in two fields with frontage onto a road known as the Mill Lane.

According to local auctioneer Thomas Potterton, the better part of the land is further from the road, while the field with road frontage can be a bit on the heavy side.

The property contained the remnants of an old dwelling and, thanks to the presence of a mobile home, the ESB connection to the land is maintained.

A stream bounding the land supplies water to the holding.

Mr Potterton had lively interest in the property in advance of the auction and on the day three bidders rose to the challenge when the executor sale opened with a bid of €80,000.

Bidding continued steadily and, after consulting with the vendors on more than one occasion, the property went on the market at €136,000 and sold under the hammer at €147,000.

The successful bidder is a gentleman from Alberta, Canada with strong local connections, while both underbidders are neighbouring landowners.
