BVD found in 1pc of calves

Just 0.8pc of calves have tested positive for BVD from the 514,000 tissue samples tested up to the end of February.

A further 0.08pc gave an inconclusive result, while 1.1pc of samples received were empty.

These values are similar to those found in the voluntary phase of the programme in 2012.

Animal Health Ireland (AHI) said the level of compliance with the programme was "very encouraging", with results received for 96pc of all calves registered during the first five weeks of 2013.

The number of tests recorded on the database is approaching 1,000,000.
