Buoyant lamb trade in the marts

A buoyant trade for heavy lambs was reported in the marts yesterday, with €120-134/hd paid in Fermoy for top-quality lambs weighing more than 50kg.

Heavy lambs at the Cork mart sold for €65-73 along with the €1/kg, while the same type in Athenry made €55-64 over.

Strong demand from butchers and wholesalers continued to underpin the mart trade.

In contrast, factory buyers were not as keen, with sluggish prices on the French and British markets being reflected in lower quotes.

Most slaughter plants are quoting a base of 470c/kg.
