Buoyant lamb prices driving on the market for all females

TRADE for all sheep continues to be extremely strong with the confidence gained from good lamb prices helping to drive on the market for all females, regardless of age but especially if they are suitable for breeding.

With no huge supply of ewe hoggets, those that are being sold are attracting a lot of customers and the prices are reflecting this.

Tullow Mart had a big sale with 1,890 sheep on offer. Quality fat lambs were up €1-2/hd making €41-56 over their weight in a range of €84-103. Trade for the store lamb was similar to the previous week at €31-40 over or €62-79/hd.

Good farmer interest drove ewe lambs to prices of €44-74 over or €90-121/hd. Cast ewes sold for €34-111. Ewe hoggets for the breeding season met with a very strong trade.

Mountbellew had a stronger trade to the previous week for the 2,400 sheep for sale. Tops for ewe lambs was €110 for a pen of 18 weighing 46kg. The general run tended to be €40-50 with the weight. Cast ewe prices ranged from €66-127/hd.

In the breeding section, ewe hoggets ranged in price from €130-175/hd.

There was also a very large entry of 2,640 sheep at Wexford Mart last Wednesday. Demand was very strong for all classes.

Butcher and factory lambs were selling for €86-106/hd, reflecting prices of €41-56 over. Store lambs made €65-85/hd.

Ewe lambs sold for €86-105 with the hogget ewes at €121-165/hd. Older ewes for breeding made from €90-155. Trade for the cast ewes remained lively at prices from €44-109/hd.

Dowra Mart had 3,400 sheep on offer on Saturday. A very brisk trade was reported for all classes. The sale was made up of mainly store lambs. The forward Suffolk and lowland-type stores made from €60-80 each while the heavier factory and butcher lambs made €85-105/hd. The heavy mountain store lambs sold for €50-65, while the lighter mountain lambs made €40-50 each. The best of the breeding ewes sold for €90-125/hd.

Kilkenny reported a steady trade for all lambs while breeding ewe hoggets sold to a top price of €150. They held the premier Belclare ram and ewe sale last week. Rams sold from a top call of €870 down to €300, while the ewes sold for €250-300/hd.
