Breeding stock still strong

The slight ease that occurred in the lamb trade last week seems to have continued into this week. Generally, well-fleshed lambs are selling for €50-65 over, with the stores making from €45-58 over.

However, breeding stock and cull ewes remain strong. Heavy cull ewes continue to sell for €100-135/hd, while ewes for further feeding are making from €50-90 each. The best of the ewe hoggets are making up to €185, while the majority range from €130-170/hd. Strong ewe lambs made up to €130/hd.

Prices for heavy lambs at Baltinglass were easier by €2/hd and stores were back by €2-4/hd. Lambs of 40-45kg made €87-95 each, while heavier types of 45-50kg sold for €102-108/hd. Suffolk cross ewe lambs made up to €130/hd. Stores sold for €65-80 each. Prices for cull ewes ranged from €70-105 while breeding ewes made up to €180/hd.

Carnew had a huge turnout of 3,100 sheep on offer, where lambs fit for slaughter made €53-64 over the weight. Stores sold for €40-52 over. A strong trade for ewe lambs saw prices run from €85-130. Store cull ewes made €56-95 while heavier lots sold for €100-137. Farmers freely paid €150-185 for ewe hoggets and €120-170 for older breeding ewes. Breeding rams sold for €250-350.

Mountbellew reported a slightly tougher trade for heavier lambs compared to the previous week, despite good demand for store and ewe lambs. Stag ewes and breeding ewes met with brisk trade. Factory and butcher lambs sold for €52-61 over the €/kg, with lighter lots making €45-55 over. Top prices in the ewe hogget section hit €185, with the bulk selling from €150 and upwards.

Enniscorthy had a steady trade as recent prices held. Heavy lambs made €52-65 over the weight in a range of €92-114. Store lambs made €50-58 over, selling from €80-90 each. In the breeding section, ewe hoggets sold for €170-195 and aged ewes made up to €170.

Lambs sold for €1.95-2.25/kg or €65-102/hd at Maam Cross mart. Cull ewes sold for €50-105 and ewes with lambs at foot made €107-145/unit.

Dowra Mart had 2,800 sheep, mainly store lambs, on offer on Saturday. The best of the Suffolk and Suffolk cross store lambs made from €75-92 each.Heavy lambs sold for €90-110 each. Ewe hoggets sold for €150-188 each for the top lots, while plainer types sold from €120-150 each.
