The price equates to €16,000/ac, the strongest paid for agricultural land in recent times.

Around 25 people gathered at the Glenroyal Hotel, Maynoot,h to see auctioneer Will Coonan of Coonan's Real Estate open the bidding at €400,000.

Five bidders followed the holding to the €500,000 mark. After that proceedings slowed somewhat as bids of €10,000 brought the price to €610,000 when it was put on the market and subsequently sold. The bidders were mainly farmers and the successful customer is a local landowner.

The land currently in tillage is in one large rectangular field and naturally drained with a slight slope. The property is well maintained with road frontage on to the main Celbridge road and access to a quiet country road to the rear.

According to Will Coonan, the price achieved is a healthy one particularly in the present economic climate. "It is a good indication of the value of agricultural land in the North Kildare area," he said.
